libstdc++: Specialize _Never_valueless_alt for jthread, stop_token and stop_source
The move constructors for stop_source and stop_token are equivalent to copying and clearing the raw pointer, as they are wrappers for a counted-shared state. For jthread, the move constructor performs a member-wise move of stop_source and thread. While std::thread could also have a _Never_valueless_alt specialization due to its inexpensive move (only moving a handle), doing so now would change the ABI. This patch takes the opportunity to correct this behavior for jthread, before C++20 API is marked stable. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/stop_token (__variant::_Never_valueless_alt): Declare. libstdc++: Constrain formatter for thread::id [PR119918]
This patch add constraint __formatter::__char to _CharT type parameter of formatter<thread::id, _CharT> specialization, matching the constraint of formatting of integer/pointers that are used as native handles. The dependency on <format> header, is changed to <bits/formatfwd.h>. To achieve that, formatting of pointers is extracted from void const* specialization to internal __formatter_ptr<_CharT>, that can be forward declared. Finally, the handle representation is now printed directly to __fc.out(), by the formatter for handle type. To support this, internal formatters can now be constructed from _Spec object as alternative to invoking parse method. PR libstdc++/119918 libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/formatfwd.h (__format::_Align): Moved from std/format. (std::__throw_format_error, __format::__formatter_str) (__format::__formatter_ptr): Declare. * include/std/format (__format::_Align): Moved to bits/formatfwd.h. (__formatter_int::__formatter_int): Define. (__format::__formatter_ptr): Extracted from formatter for const void*. (formatter<thread::id, _CharT>::parse): Specify default aligment, and qualify __throw_format_error to disable ADL. libstdc++: Simplify and comment std::jthread extension [PR100612]
Use a requires-clause on the partial specialization of the __pmf_expects_stop_token variable template, which is used for the extension that allows constructing std::jthread with a pointer-to-member-function that accepts a std::stop_token argument. Also add a comment referring to the related Bugzilla PR. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: PR libstdc++/100612 * include/std/thread (__pmf_expects_stop_token): Constrain variable template specialization with concept. libstdc++: #ifdef out #pragma GCC system_header
In r15-3714-gd3a7302ec5985a I added -Wsystem-headers to the libstdc++ build flags to help catch problems in the library. This patch takes a different approach, of disabling the #pragma system_header unless _GLIBCXX_SYSHDR is defined. As a result, the testsuites will treat them as non-system-headers to get better warning coverage during regression testing of both gcc and libstdc++, not just when building the library. My rationale for the #ifdef instead of just removing the #pragma is the three G++ tests that want to test libstdc++ system header behavior, so we need a way to select it. This doesn't affect installed libraries, as they get their system-header status from the lookup path. But testsuite_flags --build-includes gives -I directives rather than -isystem. This patch doesn't change the headers in config/ because I'm not compiling with most of them, so won't see any warnings that need fixing. Adjusting them could happen later, or we can not bother. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * acinclude.m4 (WARN_FLAGS): Remove -Wsystem-headers. * configure: Regenerate. * include/bits/algorithmfwd.h: #ifdef libstdc++: Implement std::formatter<std::thread::id> without <sstream> [PR115099]
The std::thread::id formatter uses std::basic_ostringstream without including <sstream>, which went unnoticed because the test for it uses a stringstream to check the output is correct. The fix implemented here is to stop using basic_ostringstream for formatting thread::id and just use std::format instead. As a drive-by fix, the formatter specialization is constrained to require that the thread::id::native_handle_type can be formatted, to avoid making the formatter ill-formed if the pthread_t type is not a pointer or integer. Since non-void pointers can't be formatted, ensure that we convert pointers to const void* for formatting. Make a similar change to the existing operator<< overload so that in the unlikely case that pthread_t is a typedef for char* we don't treat it as a null-terminated string when inserting into a stream. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: PR libstdc++/115099 * include/bits/std_thread.h: Declare formatter as friend of thread::id. * include/std/thread (operator<<): Convert non-void pointers to void pointers for output. (formatter): Add constraint that thread::native_handle_type is a pointer or integer. (formatter::format): Reimplement without basic_ostringstream. * testsuite/30_threads/thread/id/output.cc: Check output compiles before <sstream> has been included. |

libstdc++: Use 202100L as feature test check for C++23
I noticed that our C++23 features were not being defined when using Clang 16 with -std=c++2b, because it only defines __cplusplus=202101L but <bits/version.h> uses 202302L since my r14-3252-g0c316669b092fb change. libstdc++: Make std::jthread support pointers to member functions [PR 100612]
This adds a non-standard extension to support initializing a std::jthread with a pointer to a member function that expects a stop_token to be added to the arguments. That use case is not supported by C++20, because the stop_token would get added as the first argument, which is where the object argument needs to be to invoke a pointer to member function. libstdc++: Refactor/cleanup of C++20 atomic wait implementation
This is a substantial rewrite of the atomic wait/notify (and timed wait
counterparts) implementation.
The previous __platform_wait looped on EINTR however this behavior is
not required by the standard. A new _GLIBCXX_HAVE_PLATFORM_WAIT macro
now controls whether wait/notify are implemented using a platform
specific primitive or with a platform agnostic mutex/condvar. This
patch only supplies a definition for linux futexes. A future update
could add support __ulock_wait/wake on Darwin, for instance.
The members of __waiters were lifted to a new base class. The members
are now arranged such that overall sizeof(__waiter_pool_base) fits in
two cache lines (on platforms with at least 64 byte cache lines). The
definition will also use destructive_interference_size for this if it is
available.
The __waiters type is now specific to untimed waits, and is renamed to
__waiter_pool. Timed waits have a corresponding __timed_waiter_pool
type. Much of the code has been moved from the previous __atomic_wait()
free function to the __waiter_base template and a __waiter derived type
is provided to implement the un-timed wait operations. A similar change
has been made to the timed wait implementation.
The __atomic_spin code has been extended to take a spin policy which is
invoked after the initial busy wait loop. The default policy is to
return from the spin. The timed wait code adds a timed backoff spinning
policy. The code from <thread> which implements this_thread::sleep_for,
sleep_until has been moved to a new <bits/std_thread_sleep.h> header
which allows the thread sleep code to be consumed without pulling in the
whole of <thread>.
The entry points into the wait/notify code have been restructured to
support either -
* Testing the current value of the atomic stored at the given address
and waiting on a notification.
* Applying a predicate to determine if the wait was satisfied.
The entry points were renamed to make it clear that the wait and wake
operations operate on addresses. The first variant takes the expected
value and a function which returns the current value that should be used
in comparison operations, these operations are named with a _v suffix
(e.g. 'value'). All atomic<_Tp> wait/notify operations use the first
variant. Barriers, latches and semaphores use the predicate variant.
This change also centralizes what it means to compare values for the
purposes of atomic<T>::wait rather than scattering through individual
predicates.
This change also centralizes the repetitive code which adjusts for
different user supplied clocks (this should be moved elsewhere
and all such adjustments should use a common implementation).
This change also removes the hashing of the pointer and uses
the pointer value directly for indexing into the waiters table.

libstdc++: Fix build failure for target with no way to sleep
In previous releases the std::this_thread::sleep_for function was only declared if the target supports multiple threads. I changed that recently in r11-2649-g5bbb1f3000c57fd4d95969b30fa0e35be6d54ffb so that sleep_for could be used single-threaded. But that means that targets using --disable-threads are now required to provide some way to sleep. This breaks the build for (at least) AVR when trying to build a hosted library. This patch adds a new autoconf macro that is defined when no way to sleep is available, and uses that to suppress the sleeping functions in std::this_thread. The #error in src/c++11/thread.cc is retained for the case where there is no sleep function available but multiple threads are supported. This is consistent with previous releases, but that #error could probably be removed without any consequences. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * acinclude.m4 (GLIBCXX_ENABLE_LIBSTDCXX_TIME): Define NO_SLEEP if none of nanosleep, sleep and Sleep is available. * config.h.in: Regenerate. * configure: Regenerate. * include/std/thread [_GLIBCXX_NO_SLEEP] (__sleep_for): Do not declare. libstdc++: Move std::thread to a new header
This makes it possible to use std::thread without including the whole of <thread>. It also makes this_thread::get_id() and this_thread::yield() available even when there is no gthreads support (e.g. when GCC is built with --disable-threads or --enable-threads=single). In order for the std::thread::id return type of this_thread::get_id() to be defined, std:thread itself is defined unconditionally. However the constructor that creates new threads is not defined for single-threaded builds. The thread::join() and thread::detach() member functions are defined inline for single-threaded builds and just throw an exception (because we know the thread cannot be joinable if the constructor that creates joinable threads doesn't exit). The thread::hardware_concurrency() member function is also defined inline and returns 0 (as suggested by the standard when the value "is not computable or well-defined"). The main benefit for most targets is that other headers such as <future> do not need to include the whole of <thread> just to be able to create a std::thread. That avoids including <stop_token> and std::jthread where not required. This is another partial fix for PR 92546. This also means we can use this_thread::get_id() and this_thread::yield() in <stop_token> instead of using the gthread functions directly. This removes some preprocessor conditionals, simplifying the code. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: PR libstdc++/92546 * include/Makefile.am: Add new <bits/std_thread.h> header. * include/Makefile.in: Regenerate. * include/std/future: Include new header instead of <thread>. * include/std/stop_token: Include new header instead of <bits/gthr.h>. libstdc++: Remove redundant copying of std::async arguments [PR 69724]
As was previously done for std::thread, this removes an unnecessary copy of an rvalue of type thread::_Invoker. libstdc++: Make std::this_thread functions work without gthreads
The only function in namespace std::this_thread that actually depends on thread support being present is this_thread::get_id(). The other functions (yield, sleep_for and sleep_until) can be defined for targets without gthreads. A small change is needed in std::this_thread::sleep_for which currently uses the __gthread_time_t typedef. Since it just calls nanosleep directly, it should use timespec directly instead of the typedef. libstdc++: Define and use chrono::is_clock for C++20
For C++20 the wait_until members of mutexes and condition variables are required to be ill-formed if given a clock that doesn't meet the requirements for a clock type. To implement that requirement this patch adds static assertions using the chrono::is_clock trait, and defines that trait. libstdc++: Fix std::jthread bugs
The std::jthread::get_id() function was missing a return statement. The is_invocable check needs to be done using decayed types, as they'll be forwarded to std::invoke as rvalues. By adding fallback definitions of std::intmax_t and std::uintmax_t it's possible to define <ratio> without _GLIBCXX_USE_C99_STDINT_TR1. PR libstdc++/84535 constrain std::thread constructor
The standard requires that the std::thread constructor is constrained so it can't be called with a first argument of type std::thread. The current implementation only meets that requirement if the constructor is called with one argument, by using deleted overloads. This uses an enable_if constraint to enforce the requirement for any number of arguments. Also add a static assertion to give a more readable error for invalid arguments that cannot be invoked. Also simplify _Invoker to reduce the error cascade for ill-formed instantiations with non-invocable arguments. PR libstdc++/84535 * include/std/thread (thread::__not_same): New SFINAE helper. (thread::thread(_Callable&&, _Args&&...)): Add SFINAE constraint that first argument is not a std::thread. Add static assertion to check INVOKE expression is valid. (thread::thread(thread&), thread::thread(const thread&&)): Remove. (thread::_Invoke::_M_invoke, thread::_Invoke::operator()): Use __invoke_result for return types and remove exception specifications. * testsuite/30_threads/thread/cons/84535.cc: New.
