We use the standard Apache 2.0 file header, described in "APPENDIX: How
to apply the Apache License to your work."
This was primarily automated by running:

As part of this, switch from taking fiat-crypto under MIT license to
Apache 2.0. (It is licensed under MIT OR Apache-2.0 OR BSD-1-Clause.)
The copyright_summary tool can also be used to confirm we didn't
accidentally drop any copyright lines:

The referenced bug notes some ODR warnings in an unspecified
configuration. (Which I can't get AppleClang or GCC 14 to reproduce, at
least.) This is likely due to us switching to C++. The ODR rules in C++
are a little different, but also perhaps the detection is only kicking
in for C++.
Either way, structs in .cc files are generally not intended to leave
that compilation unit. (Unless it's an opaque struct listed in base.h.)
There's no such thing as `static struct` so this change wraps many
structs in .cc files in `namespace {`. There are also lots of structs in
test file. Those are less concerning, but test files should mostly
entirely be in a namespace so this change does that where possible for
test files containing structs.

Following the guidance in
https://opensource.google/documentation/reference/releasing/authors,
start maintaining an AUTHORS file.
Update all existing Google copyright lines to 'The BoringSSL Authors'
per the document. This CL also changes the styling to match the new
guidance: removed the '(c)' and the comma.
All other existing copyright lines are left unmodified. Going forward,
our preference will be that new contributions to BoringSSL use 'The
BoringSSL Authors', optionally adding to the AUTHORS file if the
contributor desires.
To avoid being presumptuous, this CL does *not* proactively list every
past contributor in the BoringSSL half of the AUTHORS file. Past
contributors are welcome to send us a patch to be added, or request that
we add you. (Listed or not, the commit log continues to be a more
accurate record, and any existing non-Google copyright lines were left
unmodified.)
The OpenSSL half of the AUTHORS file is seeded with the contents of the
current OpenSSL AUTHORS file, as of writing. The current contents in the
latest revision of the 1.1.1 branch
(b372b1f76450acdfed1e2301a39810146e28b02c) and master
(d992e8729ee38b082482dc010e090bb20d1c7bd5) are identical, just formatted
in text vs Markdown.
Note when reviewing: CONTRIBUTING.md and AUTHORS contain non-mechanical

This change switches nearly all of BoringSSL to use C++. The public
functions still use the C ABI, and so code written in C can still use
BoringSSL. Also the use of the C++ standard library is minimal and no
run-time requirement for it is intended.

OpenSSL added a similar helper function. It's very, very common for us
to malloc something an then zero it. This saves some effort. Also
replace some more malloc + memcpy pairs with memdup.

the original symbols. For all of Rust's language-level safety benefits,
the ecosystem seems determined to undo it with patterns that are even
less safe than C.
This is not great and the bugs need to be fixed, but do this for now to
unblock the Android update.

OpenSSL's API constraints are such that sk_FOO_sort must take a
comparison function of type
int (*cmp)(const FOO *const *a, const FOO *const *b)
However qsort expects a comparison function of type
int (*cmp)(const void *a, const void *b)
In C, it is UB to cast a function pointer to a different type and call
it, even if the underlying calling conventions are the same. Moreover,
as qsort doesn't take a context parameter on its comparisons, we cannot
do the usual convention with closures in C.
qsort_r and qsort_s would avoid this, but they are unusable. Too many
libcs don't have them, and those that do define them inconsistently. See

It seems this UB has finally hit a sanitizer in fxbug.dev/128274.
Irritating as it is to not even have a working sort function, I think
the easiest option is to just give up on qsort. As we did with bsearch
in https://boringssl-review.googlesource.com/c/boringssl/+/35304, just
implement an in-place heap sort ourselves.

At the public API, the comparison functions are a double pointer to
match qsort. qsort comparators are passed pointers to the list elements,
and our list elements are T*. qsort needs this indirection because it
can sort values of arbitrary size. However, our type-erased versions
have no such constraints. Since we know our all elements are pointers,
we can skip the indirection.

OpenSSL 1.1.x renamed these functions with an OPENSSL_ prefix.
Unfortunately, rust-openssl uses these, losing type-safety, rather than
the type-safe macros. It currently expects the old, unprefixed names due
to a different bug
(https://github.com/sfackler/rust-openssl/issues/1944), but to fix that,
we'll need to align with the OpenSSL names.
To keep the current version of rust-openssl working, I've preserved the
old names that rust-openssl uses, but we should clear these out.

Although we've switched STACK_OF(T) to use size_t, OpenSSL used int
pervasively. Much of crypto/x509 and third-party callers use int
indices. As much of that is in the public API now, ensure that
STACK_OF(T) can never exceed INT_MAX elements.

This is a double-pointer and both layers should be const. This matches
OpenSSL 1.1.1, so in addition to being more const-correct, we're more
OpenSSL-compatible.
Update-Note: Anything that defines a comparison function would need to
fix the type signature. I found only one external caller, Envoy, that
defines it. https://github.com/envoyproxy/envoy/pull/25051 fixes it.
(That we hadn't run into the upstream incompatibility suggests this is
just not a feature folks use outside the library much.)
Bumping BORINGSSL_API_VERSION, in case I missed any, and there's some
caller where we can't just use C++14 generic lambdas to smooth it over.

This aligns with upstream OpenSSL, so it's hopefully more compatible.
Code search says no one outside of the project uses this function, so
it's unlikely to break anyone.
Whether it makes things better is a bit of a wash: OBJ_dup and
OPENSSL_strdup loose a pointless wrapper. X509_NAME_dup gains one, but
hopefully that can be resolved once we solve the X509_NAME
const-correctness problem. CRYPTO_BUFFER_up_ref gains one... really
FOO_up_ref should have type const T * -> T *, but OpenSSL decided it
returns int, so we've got to cast.

In the X.509 policy rewrite, I'll be using sorted stacks to keep the
overall algorithm subquadratic. Fix up sk_FOO_is_sorted in these edge
cases so the asserts work more smoothly.

Rather than documenting the private sk_new_null, etc., APIs and then
expecting callers to infer the real API, describe a real sample API
under #if 0.
Also rename the function pointers to sk_FOO_whatever, which both matches
OpenSSL and reduces the namespaces we squat. The generic callback types
I've renamed to OPENSSL_sk_whatever, to similarly match OpenSSL. We
should also rename plain sk_whatever, but that'll require fixing some
downstream code.

MSVC 2022's C4191 warns on most function pointer casts. Fix and/or
silence them:
connect.c is an unavoidable false positive. We're casting the pointer to
the correct type. The problem was that the caller is required to first
cast it to the wrong type in OpenSSL's API, due to the BIO_callback_ctrl
calling convention. Suppress it.
LHASH_OF(T) and STACK_OF(T)'s defintions also have a false positive.
Suppress that warning. Calling the functions through the casted types
would indeed be UB, but we don't do that. We use them as goofy
type-erased types. The problem is there is no function pointer
equivalent of void*. (Using actual void* instead trips a GCC warning.)
The sk_sort instance is a true instance of UB. The problem is qsort
lacks a context parameter. I've made sk_sort call qsort_s on _MSC_VER,
to silence the warning. Ideally we'd fix it on other platforms, but
qsort_r and qsort_s are a disaster. See

glibc inlines bsearch, so CFI does observe the function pointer mishap.
Binary search is easy enough, aside from thinking through the edge case
at the end, so just implement it by hand. As a bonus, it actually gives
O(lg N) behavior.
sk_*_find needs to return the *first* match, while bsearch does not
promise a particular one. sk_find thus performs a fixup step to find the
first one, but this is linear in the number of matching elements.
Instead, the binary search should take this into account.
This still leaves qsort, but it's not inlined, so hopefully we can leave
it alone.

The fipsmodule is still separate as that's a lot of build mess. (Though

Instead of a script which generates macros, emit static inlines in
individual header (or C files). This solves a few issues with the
original setup:
- The documentation was off. We match the documentation now.
- The stack macros did not check constness; see some of the fixes in
crypto/x509.
- Type errors did not look like usual type errors.
- Any type which participated in STACK_OF had to be made partially
public. This allows stack types to be defined an internal header or
even an individual file.
- One could not pass sk_FOO_free into something which expects a function
pointer.

Most C standard library functions are undefined if passed NULL, even
when the corresponding length is zero. This gives them (and, in turn,
all functions which call them) surprising behavior on empty arrays.
Some compilers will miscompile code due to this rule. See also

Add OPENSSL_memcpy, etc., wrappers which avoid this problem.

sk_FOO_num may be called on const stacks. Given that was wrong, I suspect no
one ever uses a const STACK_OF(T)...
Other macros were correctly const, but were casting the constness a way (only
to have it come back again).
Also remove the extra newline after a group. It seems depending on which
version of clang-format was being used, we'd either lose or keep the extra
newline. The current file doesn't have them, so settle on that.

arm_arch.h is included from ARM asm files, but lives in crypto/, not
openssl/include/. Since the asm files are often built from a different
location than their position in the source tree, relative include paths
are unlikely to work so, rather than having crypto/ be a de-facto,
second global include path, this change moves arm_arch.h to
include/openssl/.
It also removes entries from many include paths because they should be
needed as relative includes are always based on the locations of the
source file.

The 2 arg OpenSSL sk_find() returned -1 on error and >= 0 on
success. BoringSSL's 3 arg sk_find() returns -1 if the sk argument
is NULL, 0 if the item is not found, and 1 if found.
In practice, all callers of the sk_find() macros in BoringSSL only
check for zero/non-zero. If sk is ever NULL, it looks like most
callers are going to use uninitialized data as the index because
the return value check is insufficient.

Including string.h in base.h causes any file that includes a BoringSSL
header to include string.h. Generally this wouldn't be a problem,
although string.h might slow down the compile if it wasn't otherwise
needed. However, it also causes problems for ipsec-tools in Android
because OpenSSL didn't have this behaviour.
This change removes string.h from base.h and, instead, adds it to each
.c file that requires it.

This lets us put the SSL_CIPHER table in the data section. For type-checking,
make STACK_OF(SSL_CIPHER) cast everything to const SSL_CIPHER*.
Note that this will require some changes in consumers which weren't using a
const SSL_CIPHER *.

Previously, public headers lived next to the respective code and there
were symlinks from include/openssl to them.
This doesn't work on Windows.
This change moves the headers to live in include/openssl. In cases where
some symlinks pointed to the same header, I've added a file that just
includes the intended target. These cases are all for backwards-compat.
